Box of Chocolates
If you asked the average person how God feels about them, you’d likely hear responses like:
- “God loves me, but He’s disappointed when I mess up.”
- “Some days He’s happy with me, other days, not so much.”
- “If I don’t do the right things, I could lose my good standing with God.”
Many people approach God as though He’s a box of chocolates—as if they never quite know what they’re going to get.
But God is not unpredictable. You don’t have to wonder how He feels about you from day to day. The problem is that we assume God’s opinion of us is based on our behavior.
The truth? What God thinks of you depends on Jesus, not on you.
Romans 8:1 tells us: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Notice what this verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t say: "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are well-behaved…"
Freedom from condemnation, blame, and guilt doesn’t come from perfect behavior. In fact, it’s impossible to be “good enough” to be free from condemnation. James 2:10 shoots down that idea: “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.”
Romans 8:1 teaches us that freedom from guilt and condemnation comes from being in Christ Jesus. That means we receive His free gift of grace by truly believing that He removed all of our sins on the cross.
Jesus alone is our assurance that we are clean and forgiven in God’s eyes.
It’s easy to say, “I believe I am saved by grace!” But deep down, do you truly believe it? Or do you still feel like God’s approval depends on your behavior?
If you fully embrace the grace of Jesus, you can confidently say:
✅ I believe that God is NEVER upset or disappointed with me.
✅ I NEVER have to work to earn His blessings.
✅ I am convinced that God ALWAYS has good things in store for me.
✅ I NEVER feel ashamed, guilty, or condemned—ever!
Yes, these statements may seem extreme—but God’s grace is extreme.
I’ll be honest: I haven’t fully grasped all of this myself, but I’m committed to renewing my mind until I believe it with all my heart.
The next time you wonder if God is pleased with you, remember: God is not like a box of chocolates. You never have to guess how He feels about you.
With Jesus, you will always receive love, acceptance, and goodness—whether you feel it or not!
