Going With the Flow

Article written by Michele A. Towers

Many of us are creatures of habit. We find comfort in our nightly routines—like enjoying a cup of tea and a book before bed, or sitting in the same seat at church. We cherish our weekly gatherings with friends that give us a sense of familiarity and stability.

These routines help us feel secure and in control, shaping our lives and our future according to our plans. There’s a certain comfort in knowing what to expect.

But what happens when life interrupts our routines with unexpected changes? When circumstances force us to adjust our schedules, rethink our plans, or even overhaul our entire lives?

Adapting to change can be incredibly challenging, especially when it threatens the stability we’ve built. Despite our resistance, life often presents us with unexpected trials—such as job loss, health concerns, or relationship struggles—that test our peace.

The Bible forewarns us that challenges are a natural part of life:

"These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."— John 16:33 (NKJV)

The key question is: how should we respond when everything feels out of control? Here’s a surprising answer:

Stop trying to control it.

Yes, you read that right. Embracing “being in the flow” can be one of the most powerful ways to find calm amid chaos.

A few years ago, I faced a major change that completely upended my life. Feeling anxious and uncertain, I prayed and asked God for guidance. That night, I had a vivid dream.

I saw myself as a young girl, about five years old, sitting in the back seat of a car. The Father was driving, Jesus sat beside Him, and the Holy Spirit filled the car. We were cruising along on a joyful road trip to an exciting destination.

Curious and restless, I kept asking questions:

"Why are we stopping here?"

"Shouldn’t we have turned at that last exit?"

"Are we almost there?"

The Father, smiling, looked at me through the rearview mirror. Jesus turned, giving me a gentle, loving look. The Holy Spirit embraced me warmly.

Together, they said with love, “We’ve got this. Why don’t you play a game? Have a snack. Listen to some music. Take a nap. Don’t worry, We’ll get you there. Just relax and have fun along the way."

When I woke up, I knew that dream was an invitation to stop striving and simply go with the flow.

I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. I realized that even when I’m not in control, God always is. He knows the route, the destination, and the timing. My job isn’t to steer—it’s to rest in His care. Trusting His sovereignty freed me to relax and believe that everything would work out exactly as it should.

God’s way of leading us may not always be the easiest or fastest, but His promise remains: His plan is always for our good.

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."— Romans 8:28 (NKJV)

The world's way suggests that we must have a plan, figure everything out ourselves, and work tirelessly to succeed. But in the Kingdom of God, things are different. With His promises, we have no reason to fear when life’s changes come knocking.

And He assures us:

"being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."— Philippians 1:6 (NKJV) So, take a deep breath. Relax. Trust the One who has wonderful plans for your life. Believe that your current path is leading you toward the destiny He has prepared. Stay “in the flow,” and you’ll see God work everything out for your good, giving you a testimony of His faithful guidance.
