Faith in Darkness

I experienced a profound lesson about God's faithfulness during my last vacation. I was staying in a seaside condo, close enough to watch and listen to the ocean from my balcony. One windy night, I could hear the waves crashing relentlessly throughout the night from my bed.

As I laid there in darkness, the noise seemed to intensify as the hours passed. The roar of the waves in the pitch-black night sounded like the chaos of a dangerous storm—a hurricane raging just beyond my view. As my imagination took over, fear crept in.

I realized that the more I focused on what I feared in the dark, the more I lost sight of what I knew in the light. Even though I was fully aware of the ocean’s presence, I couldn’t see it. During the day, I felt peace as I watched the waves rolling majestically along the shore, their beauty easy to admire from the safety of my balcony. I could see that the raging water was normal, safe, and even beautiful.

That moment reminded me of how much faith mirrors this struggle. When life is going well and the “sun is shining,” it’s easy to recognize God’s presence. I see His blessings, witness His work, and naturally respond with praise. But when life gets dark—when I face challenges, uncertainty, or pain—it becomes harder to recognize Him.

I may know He is there, but without visible signs of His hand at work, fear can take hold. Circumstances that were once manageable in the light suddenly feel overwhelming in the dark. Yet here’s the truth: God is constant and unchanging.

Just as the ocean never ceases to reach the shore, God is always at work on behalf of His children. Even when we can’t see Him, He is present. Difficult seasons might obscure our view of His plan, making Him seem distant, but He hasn’t moved. He remains steadily by our sides, working everything for our good. So even when you can’t see the way forward, keep believing. Keep trusting. Keep praising. The darkness won’t last forever, and when the light finally breaks through, you’ll see that He was with you all along.
